"Tu propia vida / Your Own Life", aguada sobre papel / gouache on paper, 41,5" x 34", 1942
Kreeger Art Museum (Washington, EE.UU./ USA)

"Composición I / Composición I", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 80 x 75 cm., 1930
Colección privada / Private Collection (Paris, Francia / France)

"Autorretrato / Self Portrait", óleo sobre lienzo sobre panel / oil on canvas on board, 45,7 x 35,6 cm., 1947

On December 4 is the birthday of

Bárbaro Rivas, Venezuelan naïve painter, born in Petare in 1893. He was an exposed child, delivered for his upbringing to a marriage.
In 1925 he discovered the painting and made his first murals for facades and hallways. However, he was not always a painter; he also worked as a railroad pawn and house painter. In 1937 he established his house and studio in a house located to one side of the church of the Calvary in Petare.
In 1949 the critic Francisco Da Antonio identified his first works, presented for the first time in a collective show, next to the paintings of other naïve in the exhibition "Seven Primitive and Spontaneous Painters of Petare" (Bar Surprise) in 1954.
In 1956 his work was revealed in an individual exhibition held at the Museum of Fine Arts in Caracas.
In 1957 His works were included in the collective sent to the Bienal de Sáo Paulo in representation of Venezuela, where he received an honorable mention. He obtained the Arístides Rojas Prize from the Official Exhibition of Venezuelan Art in 1956 and in 1960.
His artistic work has been compared to the colonial imaginary due to its deep religious feeling, a vestige undoubtedly instilled by the family that took care of his upbringing.
He died in 1967.

On December 5 is the birthday of

Gregorio de la Fuente, a renowned Chilean painter and muralist born in 1910. Along with the artists Julio Escámez, José Venturelli, Fernando Marcos, Fernando Daza and Pedro Olmos, he is one of the important representatives of the Chilean muralist movement of the 20th century, mostly influenced by the Mexican muralism.
In 1927 he entered to study in the School of Fine Arts of the Forestal Park, where he was until its closure in March of 1929. In this place he studied under Manuel Núñez and Carlos Isamitt. Later he continued his studies at the academy of Juan Francisco González, and in 1931 he returned to the School of Fine Arts, after he moved to the University of Chile under the direction of Julio Fossa Calderón. In 1937 he became a student and assistant to the mural painting course Fresco dictated by Professor Laureano Guevara to replace Israel Roa.
In 1943 he made his first trip to Argentina to study mural art. Some time later he went to Europe and in 1945 obtained the support of a scholarship of the French government to be perfected in the technique of fresco in the School of Fine Arts of Paris and in the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. During his stay in Europe he traveled to Italy, Belgium, Holland, England and Spain, and later he went to Brazil, Mexico, Guatemala, Switzerland, Soviet Union, Hungary, Bulgaria and Greece.
His work, which sought social claim through painting, was changing from social realism in the early years to decant in a more abstract and cubist style. In his first stage, one of his most important works is the mural Historia de Concepción, created between 1942 and 1945, with the collaboration of the assistants Sergio Sotomayor and Julio Escámez, located in the former Central Station of Concepción, where it is currently located The Regional Government of Biobío. This mural is considered the "treasure of the Civic District" 5 and was declared a National Historical Monument in 2008.
The artist died in 1999.

On December 6 is the birthday of

Lucia Fairchild Fuller, American painter born in 1872 in Boston, Massachusetts. Her paternal grandfather was Jairus C. Fairchild, the first Mayor of Madison, Wisconsin, and her uncle was Lucius Fairchild, Governor of Wisconsin; her brother was the composer Blair Fairchild.
She was educated at Shaw's Private School, the Cowles Art School under Dennis Miller Bunker, and at the Art Students League, New York, under William Merritt Chase and Henry Siddons Mowbray.
She began painting professionally in 1889, and produced chiefly miniatures. She was awarded a bronze medal at the Paris Exposition of 1900, a silver medal at Buffalo in 1901 and a gold medal at the Saint Louis Exposition of 1904. In 1906 she became associate of the National Academy and in 1913 was president of the American Society of Miniature Painters. She was also a member of the New York Water Color Club.
In 1893 she married Henry Brown Fuller, a fellow artist. They were both active in the Cornish, New Hampshire, arts colony.
Fuller died in Madison, Wisconsin, in 1924.

On December 7 is the birthday of

Pierre Prévost, artist born in Montigny-le-Gannelon in 1764, first great French painter of panoramas.
Pierre came from a family of vine growers, who were not wealthy enough to give him the education he would have required, but his inclination was so pronounced that his father decided to sacrifice himself and send him to Paris. There he met Pierre-Henri de Valenciennes, a skilled teacher who recommended the study of nature and also Poussin and de Lorraine. Prévost benefited from these lessons and perfected his art day by day, although he still did not have the money to help his family who spent many deprivations.
His perseverance was finally rewarded and the works he exhibited in the Louvre made him known.
His first known panorama was of Paris, and was improving little by little by the execution of other seventeen. Of these successive panoramas, the most notable are those of Rome, Naples, Amsterdam, Bologna, Tisitt, Wagram, Antwerp, London, Jerusalem and Athens.
With a great visual memory, it was enough to him to realize simple sketches of great linear precision. Few painters like him have been able to represent the different aspects of the campaign, and reproduce them on the canvas with such a surprising truth. The appearance varies according to the places represented: the sky of Tilsit is not that of Athens, the foggy aspect of London contrasts with that of Naples. He never sacrificed accuracy for effect, and this was the only truth he sought to arouse interest.
One of Prévost's talents was to choose as helpers (he could not do it alone because of the size of the works) to artists whose work was harmonious in relation to him, like Button and Daguerre. He also received help from his brother Jean.
In 1817 he embarked with the intention of reproducing views of the most famous places of Greece and Asia, with Forbin. He was responsible for the painting of Constantinople. After these trips, his health deteriorated.
He died in 1923.

On December 8 is the birthday of

Wifredo Óscar de la Concepción Lam y Castilla, Cuban artist born in 1902, who sought to portray and revive the enduring Afro-Cuban spirit and culture.
He was of mixed-race ancestry: his father, Yam Lam, was a Chinese immigrant and his mother, the former Ana Serafina Castilla, was born to a Congolese former slave mother and a Cuban mulatto father. In Sagua La Grande, Lam was surrounded by many people of African descent; his family, like many others, practiced Catholicism alongside their African traditions. Through his godmother, Matonica Wilson, a Santería priestess locally celebrated as a healer and sorceress, he was exposed to rites of the African orishas. His contact with African celebrations and spiritual practices proved to be his largest artistic influence.
Inspired by and in contact with some of the most renowned artists of the 20th century, Lam melded his influences and created a unique style, which was ultimately characterized by the prominence of hybrid figures. Though he was predominantly a painter, he also worked with sculpture, ceramics and printmaking.
Lam, like many of the most renowned artists of the 20th century, combined radical modern styles with the "primitive" arts of the Americas. While Diego Rivera and Joaquín Torres García drew inspiration from Pre-Columbian art, Wifredo Lam was influenced by the Afro-Cubans of the time. Lam dramatically synthesized the Surrealist and Cubist strategies while incorporating the iconography and spirit of Afro-Cuban religion. For that reason, his work does not belong to any particular art movement.
He held the belief that society focused too much on the individual and sought to show humanity as a whole in his artwork. He painted generic figures, creating the universal. To further his goal, he often painted mask-like faces. While Cuban culture and mythology permeated his work, it dealt with the nature of man and therefore was wholly relatable to non-Cubans.
He died in 1982.

On December 9 is the birthday of

Gerard Sekoto, South African artist and musician born in 1913. He is recognised as the pioneer of urban black art and social realism.
As the son of a missionary, he experienced music as a part of his life. His art skills emerged in his teenage years, when he attended the Diocesan Teachers Training College in Pietersburg. This school, unlike most, featured drawing classes and other craftwork. Grace Dieu had a number of skilled woodcarvers producing sculptures on commission as well as for competitions such as the annual South African Academy exhibition. Sekoto, though, never fit within the paternalistic, prescribed sculpting style at Grace Dieu, preferring to paint and draw on his own. On graduating as a teacher from the Diocesan Teachers Training College in Pietersburg he taught at a local school, Khaiso Secondary, for four years. During this time he entered an art competition (the May Esther Bedford) organised by the Fort Hare University, for which he was awarded second prize.
In 1938 he left for Johannesburg to pursue a career as an artist. He held his first solo exhibition in 1939. In 1940 the Johannesburg Art Gallery purchased one of his pictures; it was to be the first picture painted by a black artist to enter a museum collection. In 1942 he moved to District Six in Cape Town, where he lived with the Manuel family. In 1945 he moved to Eastwood, Pretoria.
In 1947 he left South Africa to live in Paris under self-imposed exile. The first years in Paris were hard, and Sekoto was employed as a pianist purely by chance at l'Echelle de Jacob ("Jacob’s ladder"), a trendy nightclub that had reopened for business after World War II. Here he played jazz and sang "Negro spirituals", popular French songs of the period and some Harry Belafonte. Music became the way that he could pay his living and art school expenses.
Sekoto's paintings became political in the 1970s due to apartheid in his home country. In 1989 the Johannesburg Art Gallery honoured him with a retrospective exhibition and the University of Witwatersrand with an honorary doctorate.
He died in 1993.

Today, December 10, is the birthday of

Peder Mørk Mønsted, Danish realist painter born in 1859. He is best known for his landscape paintings.
His father was a well-to-do shipbuilder. At an early age, he began to receive painting lessons at the art school in Aarhus and, from 1875 to 1879, studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts with Niels Simonsen and Julius Exner. In 1882, he spent some time in Rome and Capri then, the following year, visited Paris, where he worked in the studios of William Adolphe Bouguereau.
In 1889, he went to Algeria. Three years later, he travelled to Greece, where he was a guest of King George I, who was Danish. While there, he also did portraits of the Royal Family. After that, he visited Egypt and Spain.
His travels produced numerous sketches that became paintings he presented at several international exhibitions. Most of his landscapes were, however, devoted to Scandinavia. He was especially popular in Germany, where he held several shows at the Glaspalast in Munich. During his later years, he spent a great deal of time in Switzerland and travelling throughout the Mediterranean. Most of his works are in private collections. In 1995, a major retrospective, called "Light of the North", was held in Frankfurt am Main.
He died in 1941.
