Holy Smoke (Helen Thompson) [Escultura, Textiles]

Holy Smoke
Helen Thompson

Helen Thompson aka Holy Smoke is an UK-based artist that creates this beautiful textile sculptures of dogs, from natural linen and vintage textiles hand stitching, that conveys a range of expressions and a remarkable realism.
The naturalism of each piece is the result of the imperfections and freedom in the making of the work, a process through which the artist succeed in convey the unique spirit, fragility and character of the animals in their diverse forms and circumstances.
No two animals are the same and their sizes are variable from 25cm to 50cm in height.

The inspiration came from a photograph that Helen saw years ago: a feature in National Geographic of an Egyptian embalmed dog “whose bandages fell off long ago”.
«Working with wire allows me to ‘draw’ in space. The neutral quality of linen works like a blank page, with the stitching being a drawing line, bringing together my passion for drawing, sewing, sculpture and dogs!»

«I always start with the head, forming a ‘skull.’ I then decide on body shape and sculpt accordingly. With wire, card and papier-mâché, I form a ‘skin’ using fabric, and finally stitch into the fabric until I achieve the desired effect. I work from photographs and sketches, and usually have an idea of what sort of character/emotion I am trying to achieve. However, the face usually seems to emerge a little like the process of drawing.»
