On January 17 is the birthday of

Ivan Grigorievich Savenko (Ива́н Григо́рьевич Саве́нко), Soviet Russian - Ukrainian painter lived and worked in Leningrad, regarded as one of representatives of the Leningrad school of painting, most famous for his landscape paintings.
In 1950 he graduated from Kiev Art Institute in Grigory Svetlitsky personal Art Studio.
In 1950–1954, Savenko studied as post-graduate student in Ilya Repin Institute in Aleksandr Gerasimov Art studio. Master of Art-criticism (1954). Honored Artist of the Russian Federation (1975).
Since 1950 he participated in Art Exhibitions. He painted landscapes, portraits, genre scenes, sketchs from the life. Personal Exhibition in Moscow (1990).
Savenko was a member of Leningrad Union of Artists since 1952.
He died in 1987.

On January 18 is the birthday of

Eugène Anatole Carrière, French Symbolist artist born in 1849. His paintings are best known for their brown monochrome palette. He was a close friend of the sculptor Rodin and his work influenced Picasso. Some see traces of Carrière's monochrome style in Picasso's Blue Period.
He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and later under Cabanel. During the Franco-Prussian War he passed some time as a prisoner in Dresden, where the art of Rubens made a lasting impression on him, as may be seen in the glowing colors of his early paintings. About 1890 he adopted the gray, misty-color scheme with contrasts of light and shadow, so characteristic of his art, but which no other artist has been able to imitate without affectation.
His themes usually are scenes of his domestic life, and he repeatedly introduced the likeness of his wife in his paintings. The first of these, The Young Mother (1879), is now in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rouen.
Carrière was one of the leaders in the secessionist movement, which led to the founding of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts.
Several of his works may be found at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris and in National Museum of Serbia in Belgrade.
He died in 1906.

On January 19 is the birthday of

Valentin Alexandrovich Serov (Валенти́н Алекса́ндрович Серо́в), Russian painter, and one of the premier portrait artists of his era.
In his childhood he studied in Paris and Moscow under Ilya Repin and in the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts (1880–1885) under Pavel Chistyakov. Serov's early creativity was sparked by the realistic art of Repin and strict pedagogical system of Chistyakov.
The greatest works of Serov's early period were portraits. In these paintings Serov concentrated on spontaneity of perception of the model and nature. In the development of light and color, the complex harmony of reflections, the sense of atmospheric saturation, and the fresh picturesque perception of the world, there appeared the features of early Russian impressionism (though Serov was not yet aware of works of French impressionists at the time of making those paintings).
From 1890 on, the portrait became the basic genre in Serov's art. It was in this field that his early style would become apparent, the paintings notable for the psychologically pointed characteristics of his subjects. Serov's favorite models were actors, artists, and writers.
As in the work of his contemporaries John Singer Sargent and Anders Zorn, the impressionism is not doctrinaire, but derives as much from the study of Hals and Velázquez as from modern theory.
The last years of Serov's life were marked by works on themes from classical mythology. While addressing images from the ancient tradition, Serov endowed classical subject matter with a personal interpretation.
He died in 1911.

On January 20 is the birthday of

Esteban Vicente Pérez, American painter born in Turégano, Spain, in 1903. He was one of the first generation of New York School abstract expressionists.
Vicente enrolled at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes in Madrid in 1921 intending to study sculpture. He completed his training in 1924. Commenting on his experience at the Academy he said "It doesn't give you any ideas about anything. It gives you tools, and teaches you about materials. Academic training is safe. It prepares you to be against.".
He had his first one-man exhibition in Madrid in 1928, after which he left for Paris and did not return to Spain until 1930. In 1935 he married Estelle Charney, an American whom he had met in Paris. After the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936 Vicente, supporting the Loyalist forces, painted camouflage in the mountains outside Madrid for a few months. Later that year he and his wife moved to New York. The (Loyalist) Spanish Ambassador to the U.S. set him up as a Vice Consul in Philadelphia, a position which supported his family for three years. Vicente had ample time to continue with his art and had his first one-man show in New York at the Kleeman Gallery in 1937. After the fall of the Spanish Republic in 1939 he returned to New York City. During World War II he supported himself with portrait commissions and by teaching Spanish.
He was a founding member of the New York Studio School, where he taught for 36 years. Although he never exhibited in Spain during the rule of Francisco Franco, in 1998 the Spanish government opened the Esteban Vicente Museum of Contemporary Art in Segovia.
He died in 2001.

On January 21 is the birthday of

Fernando Beorlegui Beguiristain, Spanish figurative painter and engraver born in Navarra in 1928. He developed the bulk of his work in the Basque town of Eibar.
With 15 years he visited the Prado, being impressed by the paintings of Goya. Goya's influence would remain throughout his work.
He held exhibitions in Madrid and other Spanish cities, highlighting those in the Basque Country and Navarra.
The work of Gustave Doré and Francisco de Goya were the basis of his work and style that conformed with the industrial atmosphere and character of the city, resulting in a realistic and figurative painting. Beorlegui said: "I escaped from reality because I find horrifying" and that perception was shaped in his paintings as a "black paint".
Beorlegui received influences were not limited to those of Doré or Goya. In his social issues and criticism had ample value, he received also the influences of people like Gomez de la Serna, Buñuel and Fernando Arrabal.
He died in 2008.

On January 22 is the birthday of

Shozo Shimamoto (嶋本昭三), Japanese artist born in 1928.
He was a co-founder (along with Jirō Yoshihara) of the avant garde Gutai group formed in the 1950s, and his works are in museum collections such as those of the Tate Gallery and the Tate Modern (in both London and Liverpool) and the Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art in Kobe, Japan. New York Times art critic Roberta Smith has noted him as one of the most daring and independent experimentalists of the postwar international art scene in the 1950s. Internationally today he is especially noted for his work in the "mail art" genre, of which he was a pioneer.
He died in 2013.

Today, January 23, is the birthday of

Jean-Michel Atlan, French artist born in Constantine, French Algeria, in 1913.
He studied philosophy at the Sorbonne. He started as a self-taught painter in 1941. He was arrested for being Jewish and for his political activism in 1942. He pleaded insanity and was confined to the Sainte Anne asylum. He published a slim volume of poetry in 1944 and had his first exhibition at the Gallerie Arc en Ciel. In 1946 he met Asger Jorn and got involved with the CoBrA art group. His studio became a meeting place for the group in Paris.
In 1955 he exhibited in the Gallerie Carpenter. Two of the works he is known for include Le Kahena, and Composition.
He died in Paris in 1960.
