«In the painting I have cast myself in the role of Narcissus in a contemporary evocation of the ancient Greek myth, and as something of a cautionary tale. In January I returned home from the Bulgari Art Award residency in Italy where I visited the Palazzo Barberini in Rome, and spent time with Carravagio’s Narcissus. Locked in a circle, his reflection enveloped by a creeping darkness, the unusual composition inspired my Archibald entry. In Bad dad the doomed anti-hero doesn’t spurn the affections of a lover for his own reflection. Rather he rejects paternal care and the trials of domesticity.
The colour-saturated, abandoned inflatable pool toys (an homage to Jeff Koons) serve as a portrait of my three children in their absence; missing but always with me, like the perfect pop song you can’t get out of your head, the one with the happy riff but sad lyrics. I need them more than they need me.»

«I work long hours because individual works take a long time to make. In the lead up to an exhibition such as these past few months, I'll start early before breakfast, then work through the day and then I'll be in the studio for a few hours after dinner. My studio is a separate building on my property so I come and go from it all day.»

«Still Life somehow encompasses pretty much everything that artists keep returning to, issues of mortality, beauty, politics, religion, consumption etc. I've had the privilege of visiting some of the world’s great art collections and I always find myself drawn to still life by the old masters, but also contemporary artists, such as Sam Taylor-Wood for example. Still life is a genre that endures because it is still wholly relevant. It's timeless in an ironic way; that is to say the actual subjects are long decayed but the idea endures.»

"El pulpo / The Octopus", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 180 x 180 cm., 2014

"El tigre / The Tiger", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 210 x 170 cm., 2012

«I never think of [my work] thematically – if anything it's autobiographical. The subject matter is always obvious to me even though a body of work might seem disparate in its presentation of ideas and scale of media. What holds it all together ultimately is, I think, my aesthetic; it's wholly mine, authentic to me.»

«[My favourite contemporaries working today are] Jeff Koons, Richard Prince, Tilda Swinton and Phoebe Zavros.» (see below)

Richard Prince

Original photograph by Sam Abell and rephotograph by Prince

Richard Prince is an American painter and photographer born in 1949 in the U.S.-controlled Panama Canal Zone, now part of the Republic of Panama.
Prince began appropriating photographs in 1975. His image, Untitled (Cowboy), a rephotograph of a photograph taken originally by Sam Abell and appropriated from a cigarette advertisement, was the first rephotograph to raise more than $1 million at auction when it was sold at Christie's New York in 2005.

"Eden Rock", acrílico sobre lienzo / acrylic on canvas, 61 x 76,2 cm., 2006

Starting in 1977, Prince photographed four photographs which previously appeared in the New York Times. This process of re-photographing continued into 1983, when his work Spiritual America featured Garry Gross's photo of Brooke Shields at the age of ten, standing in a bathtub, as an allusion to precocious sexuality and to the Alfred Stieglitz photograph by the same name. His Jokes series (beginning 1986) concerns the sexual fantasies and sexual frustrations of middle-class America, using stand-up comedy and burlesque humor.
After living in New York City for 25 years, Prince moved to upstate New York. His mini-museum, Second House, purchased by the Guggenheim Museum, was struck by lightning and burned down shortly after the museum purchased the House (which Richard had created for himself), having only stood for six years, from 2001 to 2007.
In 2008 the painting 'Overseas Nurse' from 2002 fetched a record breaking $8,452,000 at Sotheby's in London. Prince now lives and works in New York City.
