Uruguayos / Uruguayans (XVI) - Nelson Romero

My friend Shirley Rebuffo sent me the sad news: the passing of this great artist from Uruguay, which gives me some reason to revise his recent work and make it known to those who have not yet had a chance to enjoy it.

Nelson Romero

"Niña con juguetes / Little girl with toys", lápiz sobre papel / pencil on paper, 33 x 47 cms., 2009

"Abstracto III / Abstract III", técnica mixta sobre papel / mixed media on paper, 63 x 44 cms., 2011

"Espantapájaros ciclista / Biker Scarecrow", lápiz sobre papel / pencil on paper, 35 x 50 cms., 1981

"Abstract V / Abstracto V", técnica mixta sobre papel / mixed media on paper, 63 x 44 cms., 2011

Nelson Romero was born in San Jose (Uruguay) in 1951. Self-taught, he held his first solo exhibition in 1972 at the Art Gallery of Palacio Salvo (Montevideo). Since then he regularly exhibited both in Uruguay and abroad.

"Elisa en bicicleta / Elisa on a Bike", técnica mixta sobre papel / mixed media on paper, 50 x 70 cms., 2011

"As Manuel Espinola Gomez (one of the greatest Uruguyan artists) said, the drawing does not exist as an independent discipline, as a technic with its own attributes. According to him, drawing always ended up being a paint tool. Sometimes a kind of foundational skeleton, in others, even his meat. The whole body of work of Nelson Romero, persistent, apparently the same and always different, seems to be a clear proof of the correctness of that judgment. "

"Figuras II / Figures II", técnica mixta sobre papel / mixed media on paper, 42 x 61 cms., 2011

"Hombre con guitarra / Man With Guitar", lápiz sobre papel / pencil on paper, 46 x 32 cms., 2009

"Arguably Nelson Romero is an orchestrator of paradoxes. The first one and most obvious, his ability to bring down boundaries between strict disciplines. Drawings that are beyond remarkable line management, pictorial scenes. Drawings with intoxicating engraving's fragrances. The conviction of being in front of an etching, to make the careful sight, rummager, discover the softness of the pencil, the silkiness of the charcoal. Is in this sense specially that his art touts for a subtle contemporaneity. The whole art during the last century, specially in the second half, has been dedicated to disarrange labels. But also second paradox, that contemporaneity is strongly anchored in the tradition of Western art from the Renaissance to the present. The third paradox refers to his ability to give continuity to baroque language, however, also displays a contemporary language. Consider that I speak about baroque as a style, as historical trend, not as elegant adjective. Baroque character, is in the context of post-Renaissance movement born late sixteenth century and reached its splendors in Latin American lands to half eighteenth century. "

- What has been your training in art?
- I consider myself self-taught, with all the relativity of this concept. But I had a fleeting passage of one year in the Museum of San Jose. There was Professor Osvaldo Leites, a very good painter of the Torres Garcia's school, and wanted for me to be an oil portraitist. But I liked the surrealism, magic realism and above all the graphics, and I've been consistent in developing the discipline of drawing as a valid discipline, because the drawing has always been regarded as a second fiddle to painting.

"The drawing is only a means to achieve the things that really give meaning to my life. Understand why we are here and where we are going is the most important. So when I die I want to be remembered more as a good person who drew rather than a good drawer."
